August: Neighborhood Map

Students are required to create a map of their neighborhood. The students should include all major streets, businesses, parks, etc. within a mile radius of their home. The map should include a legend as well as a compass indicating north, south, east, and west.
Students are required to create a model of the earth. Students must include each layer of the Earth and accurately label them. Three facts regarding each layer should be attached to the project. The thickness of each layer should be in ratio to actual thickness of each layer in real life (ex. The crust should not be the thickest layer.)

Students are required to create a rock collection through walking through their neighborhood, taking a trip to the beach, or hiking in the hills. The rock collection should contain three samples of each rock type. (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary)

Students are required to create a model of a volcano. Students will be placed in groups and assigned a particular type of volcano. The model should be accurate, in terms of the volcano typed being represented. Students will receive extra points for finding a method to creatively erupt their volcano.
Students are required to create a Prezi highlighting one form of pollution and its short-term and long-term affects on the planet. Students should propose real life solutions and highlight organizations that are currently attempting to solve the issue.
Students are required to create a meteorology report. The report must be recorded, edited and saved as a video. The report should include a national outlook, a ten-day forecast, and an interview from a witness of extreme weather. (i.e. hurricane, tsunami, earthquake, etc.)
Students are required to create a 35 page book about the major habitats of the world. The book with be a collaboration of art, language arts and science. Students will have the opportunity to draw and describe each biome. They will also create an original poem about nature. The habitat book must also include and essay about one issue that affects the environment and possible solutions. Please view the attached list of requirements for more information.

Students are required to build a model of an actual biome found on Earth. Students will work in groups of three to four. Using a tank, they will create their own background, supply actual vegetation, and display animal life found in the biome. Students are encourage to incorporate their own pets and are NOT required to purchase an animal. The students will then present their biomes to K-2nd grade.
