"Today, more than ever before, science holds the key to our survival as a planet and our security and prosperity as a nation. It's time we once again put science at the top of our agenda and work to restore America's place as the world leader in science and technology."
– President Barack Obama

A CALL FOR CHANGE! Welcome parents and students! With the recent findings regarding science & math education in the United States, I believe Charles Vest, President of the National Academy of Engineering summarizes our situation best in stating that, "America faces many challenges ... but the enemy I fear most is complacency. We are about to be hit by the full force of global competition. If we continue to ignore the obvious task at hand while others beat us at our own game, our children and grandchildren will pay the price. We must now establish a sense of urgency."
With this in mind the middle school science & math department seeks to provide the necessary tools to your child so that they are not only prepared for high school, but have begun to develop the critical thinking skills that will serve them well in such a competitive global economy. I encourage you to use the resources available on this website. Review the current standards for science and educate yourself on the new S.T.E.M. initiatives. Math & science literature comprehension have also been updated with the addition of the Common Core Standards. Cathedral Chapel has adopted to these changes with subscriptions to Brain Pop, Discovery Education, Quiz Hub, Current Science, Net Trekker, Mathletics, and Skill Tutor. You can find the links to these resources on this website. In addition, we have also introduced the use of technology in the classroom such as iPADs, interactive whiteboards, student response systems, lcd projectors and document cameras to name a few. This site is a constant work in progress. Please feel free to contact me at any time for questions, concerns, or ways in which I can make this site more useful. Have a wonderful school year! |
